HyreCar provides limited towing and roadside assistance to customers in the event of an accident or vehicle collision during a rental. Drivers who are involved in an accident and in need of a tow should reach out to our support team at 866-949-9446 and follow the steps to report an accident. Before towing services are issued, photographic evidence of the damaged vehicle requiring a tow must be presented, and the rental must be active with current insurance. This includes a vehicle deemed undrivable due to a stolen catalytic converter. Photos of stolen catalytic converter and police report are required prior to a towing service being ordered. Towing services are limited to 30 miles from the check-in/out location.
If the Owner’s check-out destination is further than 30 miles of the accident, the Driver should communicate with the Owner about towing the vehicle to the nearest service center within the mileage limitation. Drivers and Owners may also elect to utilize personal towing services to tow the vehicle to the Owner’s location of choice, however this will not be covered by HyreCar's protection plans.
When is an Owner responsible for towing and/or roadside assistance?
Towing and roadside services that are a result of the following items are the responsibility of the Owner and are not covered by HyreCar roadside towing services, or protection plans:
-
Vehicle maintenance and mechanical failure breakdowns
-
Any related towing or repossession fees that may be incurred when an Owner decides to tow, or repossess their vehicle without HyreCar’s pre-authorization
-
Tows related to recovering vehicles from body shops, garages, tow yards, storage facilities, impound lots, etc.
-
Tows due to cracked and/or broken windows that are not the result of a collision or accident
-
Towing fees that are a result of a flat tire if the owner does not have a spare tire or fix-it kit in the vehicle; Owners may be responsible for the cost to repair or replace the tire if we find that the flat tire was due to neglect or poor maintenance
-
The Owner is fully responsible for recovering the vehicle from the impound lot. Once an Owner has been notified that their vehicle has been impounded, the Owner has up to 24 hours to recover the vehicle to be eligible for reimbursement of impound fees under premium and premium plus protection plans; if the vehicle is not drivable and in need of a tow, the Driver is responsible for associated fees, and it is up to the Owner to recoup these charges from the Driver
The following can help you ensure your Driver’s safety and, in some cases, help you save money and avoid towing services:
-
Keep a replacement tire and/or flat tire kit in the car
-
Create an incident and best practice card and place it in the vehicle; this is a great way to offer instructions to Drivers for contacting roadside assistance
-
Things to include: vehicle fuel type and refill instructions, where to find the spare tire, and locations of charging stations for EV’s
-
-
Consider having a separate roadside assistance provider in place; this can minimize unnecessary expenses
When is a Driver responsible for towing and/or roadside assistance?
The following items are the responsibility of the Driver and it is the Owner’s responsibility to recover these charges as they see fit. HyreCar may assist in invoicing renters for these charges and attempt to collect funds on the Owner's behalf.
-
Towing fees incurred when there was an accident
-
Roadside services for lockouts, depleted fuel, at fault battery and tire repairs; read more about our tire and maintenance policies
-
Towing and roadside fees that result from a Driver abandoning the vehicle; examples of vehicle abandonment include operable and inoperable vehicle(s) that:
-
a Driver has deliberately deserted without proper communication to HyreCar and the Owner
-
is deserted and/or illegally disposed of on a highway, public or private property
-
has been left unattended for a significant amount of time
-
-
Tows to recover vehicles from impound when the vehicle is undriveable
-
Non-rideshare/delivery rentals where the vehicle is over 100 miles from the pick up location
Drivers are responsible for the vehicle until roadside assistance arrives. Vehicle abandonment is strictly prohibited. If the car is in an unsafe location the Driver should stay nearby, keep the car in sight, and hand over the keys once help arrives. HyreCar charges a $25 “gone on arrival” fee if it is found that a Driver left the vehicle before roadside assistance arrived. The Driver will also be responsible for costs including missing keys while waiting for roadside assistance.
